Bring a Favorite Book Day/Pajama Day

The kids were all excited to hear about Muffin's adventure with Gavin. In case you haven't heard, we started our star of the week last week on Thursday and Gavin was the lucky guy who got to take home Muffin. During circle time we read the journal entries that Gavin added to Muffin's diary and we saw pictures of Muffin and Gavin. They had lots of fun going out for yogurt and seeing a movie together, along with a lot of other cool stuff!!

Hanna brought in the book Pinkalicious to share with the class and we all loved it. We can see why it's her favorite book. Gavin brought in a book about Tadpoles and Frogs that had real pictures of frog eggs and tadpoles hatching and growing into frogs. It was really cool to see that, we remembered when we saw a frog in the pond at Lime Kiln Park in the fall!

I noticed in the paper today that Pinkalicious is going to be performed by First Stage in February and March in case anyone is interested in taking their child to a show.

Today was pajama day and pancake day! Mrs. Bulgerin read her favorite story called Cat and Bear and everyone loved it! Then we worked together to make the pancake mix and cook the pancakes. We discovered that some of us like plain pancakes and some of us added blueberries to our pancakes, but ALL of us like syrup on our pancakes!!

We wrote a class list about some of the things we put on our pancakes. Here is what was on the list: strawberries and whipped cream, butter, syrup, bananas, and chocolate chips!!

During activity time we worked on finishing our salt and glue art from yesterday and made ourselves in our pajamas and then we decorated a blanket to put on top of us. These will be going home next week when we finish them with writing our very own bedtime story!!

February 12th and 13th

I love the week of the Valentine's Party. There are so many great books, stories, songs, art, snacks and projects to create. Plus it's such a great time to talk about shapes and of course make lots of hearts. We read the story Heartprints this week and talked about what we can do to leave heartprints wherever we go. Heartprints are what you can feel but can't see. We talked about when we've received heartprints and the kids came up with ideas like when my mom or dad hugs me, when a friend asks me to play, when someone does something nice. We also talked about how much fun it is to give heartprints to someone else. We talked about asking someone to be your friend, including someone in what you're doing, or saying something nice to someone else. We also talked about how when your a helper at home you're leaving heartprints. The kids really grasped onto the idea and it was so neat to hear them talking to one another about giving and receiving heartprints!

We made our Valentine bags today and everyone is looking forward to the party tomorrow. We also went outside to run around since it was such a nice day. For snack we used a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut bread and then put cherry jelly on top. Then we added fruit snacks and cheerios to make eyes, nose and a smile. Yesterday we had strawberry applesauce as part of our snack.

We began using our wood shapes and hammers. The kids loved it and spent about 25 minutes hammering away and creating designs. I love hearing the kids talk about the shapes they're using while they're working.

February 7th,2013

We talked about the artist Van Gogh today.  The kids made their own version of A Starry Night by using white and yellow crayons on white paper and painting on top of it with a blue wash of tempera paint and water.  Then they used a paper towel to blot off the extra paint and leave a swirly designs in the paint.  They turned out really cool and the kids had a lot of fun making them.

The kids are getting excited for the Valentine Party on Thursday.  We'll be talking about friends and kindness

as we get ready for this holiday!

Feb. 6th

We continued with artist week and learned about Kandinsky today.  He liked painting circles on top of squares.  We had a chance to try the same technique!!Project we tried to make

We also heard a great story called Micawber by John Lithgow about a squirrel who became an artist!

The weather was so nice out we went outside and played in the snow.  Some of us wanted to go sledding and others of us wanted to dig in the snow with shovels and buckets and other containers!

We have new tunnel we can climb through inside during activity time and a tent we can play inside of  too!!

February 5th

This is artist week at school.  We kicked the week off by learning about what an artist is?  Then we looked through a book called A,B,C's of Art

Georges Seurat is the artist we learned about today.  He created a technique in art called pointillism.  The kids had a lot of fun trying the technique out using their fingers to make dots of different colors inside of a heart.  We provided magnetic mosaic tiles, dot shaped pegs and pegboards, and another magnetic design board that allowed the kids to experiment with different ways to put colors together to create designs!  If your child wants to follow up with this at home here' a great link to a video about pointillism. Artrageous with Nick

Pics from January 31st

January 31st

We had lots of fun learning about the state bird of Alaska called a Ptarmigan. Mrs. Bulgerin read a great story called Turnagin, Ptarmigan Where Did you Go? https://www.google.com/search?q=turnagain+Ptarmigan&oq=turnagain+Ptarmigan&aqs=chrome.0.57.6018&sugexp=chrome,mod=0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8k

We also listened to  ptarmigan bird calls

In art we had fun using white feathers to make ptarmigans!!

Mrs. Jenkins came in today and began to teach us new songs on the bells.  We're learning Itsy Bitsy Spider and ABC Song.  Mrs. Jenkins will be coming in every Thursday to work with us on the bells.

It was an extended day today and all of the kids wanted to go outside after lunch and play in the snow.  I brought some sleds along and the kids had fun sledding down the hills on the church grounds.  I thought they might get cold quickly, but most of them didn't want to come in!  Mrs. Chyko stayed inside in case anyone wanted to go in early and after awhile two wanted to go in while the other 3 wanted to stay out.  Finally we all went inside and worked on play dough and do a dot artwork.
